Gray Sky Event: Southeast Tornadoes

Across the South on Thursday afternoon, January 12, dozens of tornadoes were reported across Alabama, Kentucky, and Georgia, with the largest tracked tornado causing great damage and loss of life in Autauga County, Alabama. In Selma, the tornado that tore across this historic town was on the ground for miles, tearing up homes and businesses and sending debris high into the air. In other areas peppered across the Southeast dozens of homes were destroyed or heavily damaged.

The GIC monitored the storms and activated its Gray Sky playbook, collecting post-CAT images in areas with the most impacted properties for our insurer members and partners. High-resolution ortho imagery was collected in Selma, AL; Griffin, GA; Mountville / LaGrange, GA; and other areas in Autauga County, AL. This disaster imagery was quickly processed overnight at a 10cm resolution and is now available in GIC platforms.

Here’s a handful of images from the collection:

Before & After Images

The GIC also has before images of the properties struck by the tornadoes. These help with before and after comparisons, showcasing the level of damage suffered by residents in these communities.
