Gray Sky Event: Tornado in Greenfield, IA

An incredibly destructive tornado hit the town of Greenfield, Iowa, on Tuesday, May 21, 2024, destroying many homes and causing several fatalities in its wake. This tornado was estimated to be least an EF3 and moved quickly and powerfully through Greenfield, impacting neighborhoods and commercial areas, including the local hospital. The tornado also caused widespread damage across major infrastructure, leaving thousands without power even through Thursday.

Our Gray Sky team activated quickly Wednesday morning as soon as it was safe to do so and began collecting high-resolution oblique and ortho imagery of the impacted areas. GIC members were notified of the collection and availability of the imagery which was delivered less than 15 hours after wheels down on aircraft.

Below is a gallery of imagery of the devastation that rocked this sleepy community of 2,100, including a few before-and-after images that highlight the severity of the damage.

The GIC also has before images of the properties struck by the tornadoes. These help with before and after comparisons, showcasing the level of damage suffered by residents in these communities. In addition, Damage Assessment is available to help GIC members remotely review property damage so they can triage and proactively begin the claims process to help those in greatest need.
