Uncovering a $2.5M Property Claims Fraud Scheme with High-Res Imagery

Insurers are forever helping their customers pick up the pieces after major disasters such as hurricanes, wildfires, tornadoes and flooding. But what happens when the insurers become the victims?

Citizens Property Insurance, a GIC member since 2019, discovered the value of having access to current and historical high-resolution aerial imagery when they began processing claims received after Hurricane Irma hit. GIC members receive access to post-CAT imagery as part of the Gray Sky program to help gain better context of a disaster’s aftermath; it becomes a core element to Claims and SIU workflows. It’s not unusual to get a flurry of submittals as people scramble to get their lives back on track, but the Citizens SIU team began to notice some unusual claims activity the further away customers were from the biggest impact of the storm.

Just as Citizens was starting to identify potential fraud on their own, the Miami-Dade Police Department came calling for assistance into major insurance fraud schemes. What unfolded was the discovery of an intricate network of fraud. Download the entire use case about Citizens use of GIC imagery and their own investigative efforts to protect their book of business, including helping uncover a $2.5M property claims fraud scheme.
