The GIC Collects Hi-Res Imagery of Tornado Damage in Pennsylvania and New Jersey

Tornado damage in Pennsylvania

A severe storm producing high winds, large hail, and tornadoes swept through the Mid-Atlantic region on July 29. Numerous tornadoes touched down, including an EF3 tornado along the New Jersey-Pennsylvania border and a EF2 tornado along the coastline in eastern New Jersey. The National Weather Service confirmed five tornadoes in New Jersey alone.

GIC insurer members and partners, including the NICB, asked the GIC to activate its Gray Sky program and collect aerial imagery of the damaged areas. As soon as weather cleared and it was safe to fly, the GIC deployed two planes to capture the storm-damaged areas on July 30. The capture areas include:

  • Lamberville / Hopewell Areas, New Jersey
  • High Bar Harbor / Long Beach Island Areas, New Jersey
  • Cartersville / Lumberville / New Hope Areas, Pennsylvania
  • Bensalem / Feasterville / Trevose Areas, Pennsylvania

High-resolution ortho imagery is now available for all the areas above so insurers and emergency responders can understand the full-scope of the damage. In addition, oblique imagery was collected for Bensalem, Feasterville, and Trevose region. Oblique imagery provides north, east, south, and west views of homes and commercial buildings within the capture area.

Imagery can be viewed in the GIC Viewer, ArcGIS, and in GIC partner platforms.
